With Cork losing money on their new stadium, Supervalu’s money should be impossible to resist
Every time we hear it we cringe just a little. It grates on the ears. It crushes the soul that little bit more. A tiny reminder, just a couple of seconds at a time, that nothing is sacred, that it’s the corporations’ world and we’re just living in it.
Unsurprisingly enough, naming rights for sports and cultural venues first originated in the United States, home of the free-market (or rapacious capitalism if you want to view it that way), in the early part of the 20th century, before being formalised in the second half of it.
