The cost of hiring a nanny has shot up as desperate parents fight over nursery places.
Full-time nannies are now paid 11pc more than they were a year ago, according to the latest figures from payroll service Nannytax, with the average live-out nanny now earning as much £35,984 a year.
Around 9pc of parents employing nannies do so as they cannot secure nursery places for their children, Nannytax claims, with 57pc of parents surveyed needing “wraparound” care to cover the school run, tea times and bathtime.
The number of childcare providers in Britain – including nurseries and childminders – has fallen by 4,800 in the last year, resulting in 24,500 fewer childcare spots for children to take up, according to the regulator Ofsted.
Salaries have risen the most in the home counties and the capital, where nannies working at least fifty hours a week have seen a 14pc pay increase since March 2022.
Nannies working in London are paid the most at £42,848 a year, or more than £3,500 a month, meaning that they now earn as much as many junior doctors, consultants and accountants.
