India has taken a significant step towards becoming the fourth nation to execute a controlled landing on the moon with the successful launch of its Chandrayaan-3 mission on Friday. The spacecraft, named “Chandrayaan” meaning “moon vehicle” in Sanskrit, took off from the Satish Dhawan Space Center in Andhra Pradesh state to embark on its journey to the moon.

The launch attracted crowds at the space center, and over a million viewers tuned in on YouTube to witness this historic event. The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) confirmed on Twitter that Chandrayaan-3 is now in a precise orbit and has begun its expedition to the moon, with the spacecraft reported to be in normal condition.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his admiration for the achievement, stating that Chandrayaan-3 marks a new chapter in India’s space exploration. He commended the dedication and ingenuity of the scientists involved in this momentous mission, emphasizing how it uplifts the dreams and ambitions of every Indian.

Chandrayaan-3 is expected to land on the moon on August 23, marking India’s second attempt at a soft landing. The previous endeavor, Chandrayaan-2 in 2019, encountered a setback when its rover failed to land successfully. However, the Chandrayaan-1 mission in 2008 achieved lunar orbit and deliberately crash-landed on the lunar surface.

Comprising a lander, propulsion module, and rover, Chandrayaan-3 is a project developed by ISRO. Its primary objective is to safely land on the moon’s surface, gather data, and conduct scientific experiments to enhance our understanding of lunar composition.

Achieving a successful soft landing on the moon is a complex feat accomplished only by the United States, Russia, and China so far. Indian engineers have been working meticulously on this mission for years, aiming to navigate the challenging terrain of the moon’s unexplored South Pole.

India’s first lunar mission, Chandrayaan-1, made the remarkable discovery of water molecules on the moon’s surface. Despite the previous setback, Prime Minister Modi has vowed to continue advancing India’s space program and ambitions.

In addition to lunar exploration, India has made significant strides in space technology. The country’s space program has a history dating back over six decades, and under the leadership of Modi, India has emerged as a rising power in the global space arena. Notably, India became the first Asian nation to reach Mars in 2014 with the Mangalyaan probe and has achieved remarkable satellite launch milestones.

The Indian space sector has become a thriving hub for innovation and technology, attracting investments and garnering attention from world leaders. During Modi’s recent visit to the United States, collaboration in the space economy was a key focus of discussions with President Joe Biden.

India’s space ambitions extend beyond the moon and Mars, as ISRO has proposed sending an orbiter to Venus in the future. With rapid development and innovation in space technology, India’s space program continues to shape its rising prominence on the global stage.
