Canadiens GM Kent Hughes announced he had acquired Petry from the Pittsburgh Penguins as part of a three-way trade with the San Jose Sharks on Aug. 6. Forward Mike Hoffman went to Pittsburgh and Rem Pitlick to San Jose, while the Canadiens got goalie Casey DeSmith, forward Nathan Légaré and Pittsburgh’s second-round pick at the 2025 NHL Draft. Hughes wasn’t made available to the media to discuss the trade, and rumours immediately spread that another trade was coming.

Petry, 35, has two seasons left on a contract with a cap hit of US$6.25 million a year. The Penguins retained 25 per cent of Petry’s salary ($1.56 million), and the Canadiens are retaining half of the rest, meaning his cap hit with the Red Wings will be about $2.34 million.
Petry spent eight seasons with the Canadiens after being acquired from the Edmonton Oilers in March 2015. He requested a trade from the Canadiens for family reasons during the 2021-22 season after his wife, Julie, was upset with the COVID-19 restrictions in Quebec and moved their family back home to Michigan. Petry was traded to the Penguins in July 2022 with Ryan Poehling for Montrealer Mike Matheson and a fourth-round pick in 2023, which the team used to select defenceman Bogdan Konyushkov.
The fourth-round pick in 2025 the Canadiens will be getting from the Red Wings will be the later of Detroit or Boston’s pick, the team said. Detroit acquired Boston’s pick in a trade for Tyler Bertuzzi in March.
Lindstrom, 24, had a goal and seven assists in 36 games with the Red Wings last season. The native of Ostervala, Sweden, was drafted in the second round, 38th overall, by Detroit in 2017. He has a one-year contract worth $950,000 and will be a restricted free agent next summer.
