Is Sri Lanka’s Qualification Still a Possibility?

Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and the Netherlands find themselves in a similar situation with four points from six games in the ICC T20 World Cup. While the odds appear challenging, mathematically, there’s a slim chance that two teams could reach 12 or more points, leaving seven teams competing for two spots. Sri Lanka, capable of reaching 10 points, remains in contention, alongside Pakistan and the Netherlands. Yet, considering their performance thus far and with upcoming matches against India and New Zealand, Sri Lanka’s prospects are notably slim.

How much does this victory improve Afghanistan’s chances of finishing in the top four?

Afghanistan’s victory over Sri Lanka has secured them six points in six games. If they win their remaining three matches, they can reach 12 points. With only four other teams capable of achieving 12 or more points, Afghanistan stands a fair chance if they reach that threshold. However, their upcoming matches against Australia and South Africa present challenges. Even 10 points could offer them a chance for qualification if results elsewhere are favorable. Nonetheless, their current net run rate (NRR) of -0.718 might work against them if NRR becomes a determining factor, as all the current top four teams have NRRs of over 0.95.

Pakistan’s Prospects Heading into the Clash with Bangladesh

Pakistan’s T20 World Cup campaign has been less than stellar, but there remains a mathematical possibility of securing a top-four spot, even potentially third place if other results align favorably. While catching up to India’s 12 points seems unlikely, should New Zealand, South Africa, or Australia falter and not exceed 10 points, Pakistan could find themselves competing based on net run rates. Furthermore, in the event of a loss, Pakistan could still be part of the eight-point scramble mentioned earlier.

With this third win in the tournament, Pakistan is at 5th spot with 6 points and has a net runrate of -0.024. While Bangladesh slipped to 9th position, having 2 points and a NRR of -1.446.

Will 14 points be enough for qualification?

The qualification threshold for the semi-finals is set at 14 points, which only India, South Africa, New Zealand, and Australia can achieve. This signifies that India, with a victory against Sri Lanka on Thursday, will secure their spot in the semi-finals.
