Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) president Mayawati said on Wednesday that the Opposition, by naming its alliance as INDIA, gave the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) the opportunity to tamper with the Constitution over the issue of the country’s name.
“Also, there is an apprehension that all this is happening with an internal collusion of the ruling dispensation and the Opposition. This should be condemned,” Mayawati said.

Mayawati’s statement came a day after a political row broke out after the government sent out a G20 Summit dinner invitation in the name of the ‘President of Bharat’, in place of the customary ‘President of India’.
Mayawati also said that the BSP wants the Supreme Court to take cognizance of the matter and ban the organisations, parties and alliances formed with the name of the country. She added that the BJP-led government at the Centre should have moved the Supreme Court against the naming of the INDIA alliance or should have prohibited the naming by bringing a law.
Mayawati said that people understand the Congress and the BJP’s game plan to make it “Bharat versus India” ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. Both parties, Mayawati added, have ignored the essential issues of poverty, inflation, unemployment and development. “That is why our party’s (BSP’s) move to maintain distance from both casteist, communal and capitalist alliances is completely right and in the interest of people,” she added.
