A special court on Monday granted bail to alleged bookie Anil Jaisinghani, arrested in March for the alleged blackmail and extortion of Amruta Fadnavis, wife of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
This was the second bail plea by Jaisinghani in the case though he will continue to remain behind bars as he is yet to be granted bail in two other cases filed by the Mumbai Police.
On Monday, special judge DD Almale granted Jaisinghani bail on execution of surety of Rs 50,000 in connection with the case filed by Malabar Hill police station on charges, including extortion, criminal conspiracy and relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
Among the conditions are that he shall attend the court on each day of the hearing and shall not cause any threat, promise or inducement to the prosecution witnesses. He has also been directed to surrender his passport to the investigation officer and he cannot leave India without prior permission of the court.
Jaisinghani’s daughter, Aniksha and his cousin, Nirmal, who were arrested along with him in March, were granted bail previously. At that time, the court had rejected Jaisinghani’s bail plea observing that he had absconded in many cases filed against him, therefore, it s not fit case to grant him bail at that stage.
In his second bail application filed this month, lawyers Sudeep Pasbola and Swarali Jogalekar, arguing on his behalf, had submitted that the investigation in the case is over and the chargesheet has also been filed. It was also submitted that while the main allegations in the case were against her daughter, she had already been granted bail.
The lawyers also submitted that there is no evidence against him to show that he had made any demand for extortion. They also said that the Prevention of Corruption Act is not applicable in the case. The police had opposed bail to Jaisinghani stating that he had been absconding for many years and if granted bail, he may not remain present for the trial.
The detailed order is yet to be made available.

In March, the Malabar police had filed an FIR against Aniksha and Jaisinghani on the complaint of Amruta. Police claimed that Aniksha, posing as a designer, had gained access to Amruta in 2021 and insisted that she wear clothes and jewellery provided by her at events. Subsequently, Aniksha had offered a bribe of Rs 1 crore to Amruta, seeking her intervention in dropping the cases against her father. Police claimed that after Amruta refused and blocked her phone, Aniksha then threatened her through the videos and sought Rs 10 crore as extortion money.
After his arrest in this case, the Madhya Pradesh police, Goa police and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) also took Jaisinghani’s custody for probes in other cases. He has been granted bail in those cases as well.
Jaisinghani is yet to be granted bail in two other cases filed against him in 2016 — one by Azad Maidan police and another by Saki Naka police in Mumbai, on charges of cheating and forgery.
