The adventure fantasy starring Margo Robbie as the title character and Ryan Gosling as her go-to guy Ken earned $53 million at the domestic box office this weekend.
Globally, the film has pulled in an astounding $1 billion, just behind The Super Mario Bros Movie (1.4B), but well ahead of traditional blockbusters such as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ($845.3M), Fast X ($704.7M) and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse ($683.8M), according to Box Office Mojo.
Barbie director Greta Gerwig, 40, now holds the distinction of being the first solo female director to have a movie cross the billion-dollar threshold.Â
Coming up in second place this week was the horror-thriller sequel Meg 2: The Trench.

The total weekend tally amounted to an estimated $178 million helping the domestic box office soar higher than $6 billion for the period of January to August.
It was a 22 percent increase over the same period last year, according to Deadline.Â
Red White and Royal Blue, a bromance involving the son of the US president and a British prince opens next week, along with the horror film The Last Voyage of the Demeter. Â
