Weddings in India are a grand spectacle with elaborate rituals and traditions. Wedding guests deck up in traditional attire to attend ceremonies that last several days. One of the best ways to experience the local culture and meet people anywhere is to attend a wedding. Did you know about an Australian startup that gives foreign tourists a chance to experience being wedding guests in India?

JoinMyWedding was founded in 2016 by Hungarian-Australian Orsi Parkanyi. The company connects foreign travellers with Indian couples willing to have them as guests at their weddings for a fee.

The company says that one can “dress in traditional Indian attire, taste the exotic flavours, dance to enchanting music and take part in beautiful wedding customs” by being part of the couple’s special day.

The website lists the upcoming weddings from different parts of India such as Mysuru, Udupi, Vadodara, Chandigarh and Delhi. Guests can be a part of all the ceremonies of a couple by paying USD 150-200 (approximately Rs 12,000 to Rs 16,000). The website says the contribution will act as a gift to the couple.

Dr Christoph Flamm, a guest from Australia, is quoted as saying on the website, “It was the coolest thing I did in India. The food, the people, the culture – you get everything!” Niamh Kelly, from Ireland, said, “It was a great way to blend in with the locals and make friends.”

Festive offer

A user on X posted about the Australian startup and wrote, “I’ve seen it all. There is now a website where foreigners can get themselves invited to an Indian wedding.”

“Brilliant idea. I would be more than happy to be a part of this,” a user commented. “I love this! Indian weddings are quite the spectacle with its many rituals and festivities and I think it’s great that more people get to experience it. After years of attending weddings in Kerala, even I enjoyed the experience of attending weddings with different traditions,” said another.
