Is the United States Facing a Renewed Surge of Covid-19? Emerging Covid Variants Raise Concerns

The specter of a resurgent Covid-19 wave looms over the United States, as novel variants such as EG.5, FL.1.5.1, and BA.2.86 continue to spread. These variants, which have evolved from the original virus, have prompted apprehension among the populace, given the havoc the pandemic wrought globally, claiming countless lives. Yet, despite the surge in cases, hospitalizations linked to these new strains remain lower than during previous waves.

According to a recent CBS News report, health officials express optimism that forthcoming vaccines will confer protection against these novel variants as well, helping to mitigate the impact of their spread.

Dominant Strains in the US

At present, the EG.5 variant holds the distinction of being the most prevalent Covid-19-causing strain in the United States. As of August 18, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that EG.5 accounts for a staggering 20.6% of newly reported infections. In second place is the FL.1.5.1 variant, responsible for 13.3% of new infections in the country, as reported by the CDC.

Notably, both EG.5 and FL.1.5.1 are considered subvariants of the XBB variant. A mutation known as F456L appears to contribute to their heightened transmissibility compared to other viral strains.

BA.2.86, a variant of concern, currently causes infections on a relatively modest scale. Nevertheless, the presence of a multitude of mutations within critical segments of the virus renders it a potentially perilous variant.

Symptoms Associated with the New Variants

Symptoms attributed to these new variants closely resemble those associated with earlier strains. The World Health Organization (WHO), on August 9, indicated that the severity of the disease has not notably changed due to the emergence of these new variants.

Reports from CBS News affirm that symptoms from these novel strains mirror those seen over the past year, encompassing familiar cold and flu-like signs such as cough, headache, muscle aches, runny nose, and fatigue.

Testing for the New Variants

Encouragingly, Covid detection tests appear to be effective in identifying these new variants. Todd Merchak, co-lead of the National Institutes of Health’s RADx Tech initiative at the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering, noted that with the genomic information available and epitopes mapped for antigen-based tests, computational analysis aids in assessing any potential impact on test performance.

Vaccination Efforts Against New Variants

Vaccine manufacturers and health authorities express confidence that the upcoming generation of Covid-19 vaccines, including booster shots, will effectively combat the threat posed by these novel variants. Dr. Sylvie Briand of the WHO stated, “We strive to select the antigen that offers the broadest possible immunity, acknowledging the likelihood of virus evolution between the formulation of recommendations and vaccine production.”

As the United States navigates the challenges posed by these evolving Covid variants, the efficacy of vaccination campaigns and ongoing surveillance efforts will remain pivotal in curbing the potential resurgence of the virus.
