A married woman from Uttar Pradesh has accused the man she was in a relationship with of raping her and then selling their 5-month-old girl to another man in Surat. Both men have been booked by the Surat Police.
According to a police complaint filed by the 28-year-old woman, she was in a relationship with a 22-year-old man from her village. She alleged that as her husband would not have divorced her and the man’s family would not have accepted their relationship, they eloped to Surat in 2022.

In the complaint, the woman alleged that the youth assured her that he would marry her and developed physical relations with her, leading to her becoming pregnant. A girl was born to them on July 11, 2023. The woman alleged that the 22-year-old showed no interest in his daughter and the couple regularly quarrelled over this. She alleged that the man then promised to marry her if she allowed him to sell the girl. She claimed that fed up of the regular quarrels, she agreed.
The 22-year-old man then approached a labourer who worked with him in a textile unit. The man was married but did not have a child. On December 30, 2023, the labourer bought the girl for Rs 7,000, said police. A week later, the 22-year-old allegedly left for UP, leaving the woman alone in Surat.
The police said that the woman then managed to contact the labourer who had bought her daughter and sought that she be returned to her. “He returned the girl on January 2 and demanded his money back. While the child’s biological father was untraceable, the woman failed to pay rent and was evicted by her landlord. She then went on to get a job at a textile factory…,” said a police officer.
There, she narrated her story to her colleague, who helped her contact Godadara police and file a complaint against the two men.
Godadara police Inspector J C Jadav said, “We have booked both men. While the girl’s father has been booked for rape, the other man has been booked for human trafficking…”
“The 22-year-old man has returned to his native place and we have alerted the local police to let us know when he visits his village. We have also sent our team there,” the officer added.
