Shreyovi Mehta, a fifth-grade student from Faridabad, has made headlines worldwide after securing the runner-up spot in the ‘10 Years and Under’ category at the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition.
Her winning entry, a photograph entitled “In the Spotlight”, was captured during a morning walk in Keoladeo National Park, Bharatpur. The image beautifully showcases two peahens silhouetted beneath trees, a moment she stumbled upon by chance. Competing against nearly 60 000 other entries from 117 countries, her work stood out for its elegance and composition.
In an interview, Shreyovi expressed her happiness at being recognized for portraying India’s national bird. She shared her hopes of continuing her passion for photography and one-day earning similar recognition for her images of the national animal, the tiger.
Kathy Moran, chair of the judging panel, highlighted the diversity of species and environmental issues depicted in this year’s entries, emphasizing how they reflect the evolving nature of the competition, which has grown to encompass a broader representation of the natural world’s beauty and its challenges.
Shreyovi is set to receive a medal at a special ceremony hosted by London’s Natural History Museum on October 8, where her accomplishment will be officially recognized.
