Euro 2024 has reached the last-16 stage and today sees England take on Slovakia at 5pm BST followed by Spain against Georgia at 8pm.
Gareth Southgate’s side face Slovakia in their knock-out match in what turns out to be a favourable draw for England. Southgate’s side have failed to impress in their first three matches having scored just two goals without providing a real threat.
Poor performances in the group games culminated in disgruntled England fans throwing plastic beer cups at Gareth Southgate following a 0-0 draw with Slovenia and players’ families were soaked “from all angles” after getting caught in the crossfire.
Yesterday, defending champions Italy crashed out of Euro 2024 after losing to Switzerland 2-0 in the last 16.
Goals in each half from Remo Freuler and Ruben Vargas gave the Swiss their first win over their southern neighbour for 31 years and set up a quarter-final against England or Slovakia ion July 6.
Meanwhile, Germany went from despair to delight in the space of minute as a couple of big VAR calls set the host nation on its way to a storm-affected 2-0 win over Denmark and a place in the quarter-finals.
Today’s fixtures
England vs Slovakia
England are not playing well but they are not conceding goals. It is likely to be more of the same from Slovakia, who will defend deep and look to frustrate. But Southgate’s side surely cannot continue to struggle in attack given the talent at their disposal.Predicted score: 2-0
