Just like you get all kinds of travellers, you get all kinds of accommodation. Staying at a backpackers is a great choice for many, regardless of budget. The backpacker culture is big in many countries overseas (ask anyone who’s toured Southeast Asia on a shoestring) where sharing a dormitory with a bunch of strangers is the order of the day.

Meeting other like-minded souls is helpful to many tourists, especially solo-travellers. Some simply enjoy the vibrant community atmosphere, and others want to save as much money on accommodation as possible.

In Cape Town, there are a whole lot of funky hostels. Whether you’re visiting the Mother City or live here and just want to get out and explore new places, here are six perfect spots to stay at, and they’re all under R250 per person per night. Most places have different options including mixed-gender dorms, designated male/female dorms and some also include budget-friendly private rooms.

1. 91 Loop Boutique Hostel

Can you guess where this hostel is located? Spot on! This backpackers has followed suit on a unique trend, namely sleeping pods, as a way to ensure privacy (and distance, especially in light of Covid) even in a shared dormitory. These minimalistic self-contained pods have screen walls and curtains for complete privacy. Each pod comes with its own reading light, shelf for all your accessories, power socket, and lockable storage space. If that’s not your vibe, there are standard bunk beds too.
